INAUGURAL OAKLAND RUNNING FESTIVAL SUNDAY MARCH 28, 2010

The Inaugural Oakland Running Festival had over 6000 participants running the 5K, relay, half marathon, and marathon. At the starting line Mark Curry (Hanging with Mr. Cooper tv series) was giving high fives to all the runners, I thought that was cool, he was even at the finish congratulating all the finishers.

The Oakland Marathon course is not a easy course but aside from the hills from miles 5-10 it was mostly flat. The half marathon was a flat course. I was surprised by all the crowd support, I wasn’t expecting too much people on the course cheering the runners on but there seemed to be crowd support everywhere. They were saying “go oakland”, “thanks for running”, “great job”, a bunch of positive things it was motivating. I think the organizers did a great job for this inaugural event and I would recommend running this race at least once.
5K, RELAY, and HALF MARATHON
Prasun ran the first leg for his marathon relay team Rundisk, his leg had a slight incline. He finished leg 1 in 50:08, his team finished 10th overall. Loi ran her second half of the year, she thought she did not have enough training for this race but she still managed to finish in 1:51, I think she could had done better if she would had started in the first corral instead of the middle corral. Mike running with that crazy beard and not that much training finished in 2:07. Hai participated in two events, she ran the 5K the day before the half marathon and finished in 30:25 for a new PR, then ran the half marathon a few hours later. She finished the half in 2:11, she is getting ready for the US Half and the Big Sur Marathon.
MARATHON
I was suppose to use this marathon as my last long run before Boston. Then I found out my rival registered for this race two weeks before race day. This was a rare oppurtunity, since she only races 1 or 2 marathon’s a year and this would be our first time going head to head in the marathon event. We have raced each other 7 times in various distances, she has the series lead 4-3.
I was looking for her at the start and didn’t find her untill 5 minutes before the race started. She arrived with her entourage team Pamakids, there were about 6 of them near the front of the starting line, she was the only female in there group. I went up to her and chated a bit, I asked her what time she was expecting. She replied I want to run a 3:10 but the pace group was running even splits for the whole marathon and this marathon has a hill on the course. She didn’t think she could do even splits through the hills. She then asked me what time I was expecting from this race, I told her 3:15 but I am going to try to pace with you. She smiled and said good luck, I said thanks I am going to need it to stay with you.
As the gun sounded I was right behind her and team Pamakids, we ran the first 3 miles at a great pace, as we hit mile 4 three of her teammates took off and the other two stayed with her. We hit mile 5 and I can feel the inclines starting, she was strong she ran maybe 10-20 seconds slower on the hills. I suck at uphills, I was 30-40 seconds slower. The next few miles were hills and I can see her getting further and further away from me. I was just thinking keep her in sight, I lost sight of her at mile 8, as I hit the crest of the hill at mile 10. I saw one of her teammates at the bottom of the hill but didn’t see her, I thought to myself you better get going or you are really gonna lose her. I decided to gun the downhill. The downhill was about a mile long, I had a fast split for that mile (5:45) and as I turned the corner at the end of the downhill that is when I saw her. I caught up to her around mile 11, she saw me and looked surprised to see me, she said Mark and I said yup. I was thinking I am beat up from the hills, she should be too. I was wrong the next 5 miles she was runing 6:50-7:15 pace, I was having a hard time keeping up with her. At mile 16 I couldn’t even keep a 7:30 pace, after that she was outta here. I totally gave up after I lost sight of her, all I wanted to do now was finish the race. I finished the marathon in 3:16:59, my third fastest marathon time and my fastest marathon time with a hill in it. I met up with my rival at the end of the race and congratulated her, she finished in 3:08. With a smile she said you should had paced your yourself, I said yeah I know. That was the first time she talked smack to me, that was cool. She now owns the head to head series 5-3. http://www.athlinks.com/RivalCompare.aspx?ridc=41465516&rid=19061678

This was Monica’s first marathon of 2010, my rivals last marathon was in December. She ran CIM and finished with a PR of 3:08:44. She is from Oakland so she knew the course, she killed it and finished with her second fastest marathon time of 3:08:58, seconds away from a PR. She finished as the fourth female overall and second in her age group. Will seems to be improving at every race, he finished the Shamrockn’ half in 1:33 a few weeks ago, then sets a new marathon PR in Oakland with a time of 3:43. That was almost a 8 minute improvement from his previous marathon PR and this course is not easy, next challenge for Will the Big Sur Marathon. Rebecca running marathon #5 of this year and her second marathon in two weeks, she totally surprised me by running a 3:46. I didn’t think she could break 4 hours since she ran the LA Marathon a week prior to this race. I was lucky chatting with her before the race and she is thinking about doing the Tahoe Triple again. She asked if I was going to run it also, I told her no way my name isn’t Rebecca. The Tahoe Triple is three different marathon’s in three consecutive days in Lake Tahoe and they all have hills. This was also her 40th marathon which coincidentally was my 40th also. Roni was the 3:50 pacer for this race, we bumped into him at the expo. He was injured but still managed to pace the 3:50 group, Roni finished in 3:49. Big Sur will be his next marathon also. Proxy had problems with the hills like me but still did a great job finishing in 3:50, he has the US Half coming up followed by the Boston Marathon, then Big Sur. William running marathon #2 of his career was worried about his knee the day before the race, he bought some knee braces the day before race day. He finished the race in 4:22 over an hour faster than his first marathon. I think it also helped that he didn’t do a 20 mile run a few days before, like he did when he ran his first marathon. Tammy running her third marathon (Surf City, Napa, and Oakland) this year and her second marathon in March finished in 4:40, she also has the Big Sur Marathon as her next marathon.
