HONG KONG MARATHON & HALF SUNDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2010
Gil’s race experience at the Hong Kong Marathon
The race was the toughest so far due to higher than expected temperature and level of humidity. Many runners collapsed with injuries (cramping and dehydrated) and some were taken to the hospital with four of them critical. The race started at 6:00AM and we were sweating before the race, which tells you that the condition was bad. Up to KM13 mark was flat, and rolling hills from KM14 to KM20 mark. Organizers changed the course this time and added another uphill segment to it. The race was not as convenient compared to races in US because not enough porta toilets were provided, nothing was visible in the starting area. One or two portas were along the road. Water/drink stations were at every 5 kilometers. Limited food at the finish line and spectators were very quiet. As a whole, the race was really dry, not fun. I don’t think the race can be recommended.

ROCK N ROLL MARDI GRAS MARATHON SUNDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2010

I knocked out another state off my marathon bucket list. I got to participate in the Inaugural Rock N Roll Mardi Gras Marathon, with over 12800 other runners (3515 marathon finishers and 9308 half marathon finishers). I wasn’t expecting to do much since my trip to New Orleans was basically a day and a half. I took a red eye flight Saturday at midnight from San Francisco and came back on Sunday. I did so much in that amount of time, thanks to Cindy and Noel.
Two of my running buddies showed me New Orleans, Noel my cross country team mate from high school played chauffer while Cindy was my tour guide for this awesome trip. Noel picked us up from the airport right before his golf game and dropped us off at our hotel, from there Cindy and I took the walk to the expo. I found out at the expo that Sugoi was not a sponsor anymore but Brooks took over. We picked up our packets and checked out the expo, then headed out to explore New Orleans.

Lucky I had Cindy with me as a tour guide, she use to live in Baton Rouge and knew New Orleans. We headed to the River Walk Mall and stopped by Cafe Du Monde for some coffee and beignets. We also checked out the french market place, a few shops, street performers, and ate a muffuletta sandwich at Central Market. This might be my new pre race snack if I can find a place that makes them here.

On our way back to our hotel we passed by Bourbon street, I knew they had a bunch of bars there, but I didn’t know they had strip clubs there also. Cindy was educating me on religious beliefs there and about the mardi gras beads while we were walking around the French Quarter.
We headed to Orleans Redvine for dinner, I had the fish plate special with a creme brulee for dessert as a pre race dinner. New Orlean’s has great food, I’ll have to come back and try more food. I wanted to try some spicy stuff but I wasn’t sure how my stomach would react to it during the race. I also got to try a oyster bun po-boy sandwich at Johnny’s Po Boys. Cindy found a baby pearl in her grilled oyster bun po-boy sandwich, the funny thing is that this is the third time she has found a baby pearl while eating a oyster.

THE RACE
Cindy and I took the shuttle to the start from the superdome which was close to our hotel. The race started on Race street (funny)/Tchoupitoulas street. There were a few Mardi Gras floats on the course. The course was mostly flat with water stations at every mile. This was the first Rock N Roll race that I have participated in that didn’t have pace groups. This race was a training long run to see what kind of shape I was in for me. I was thinking I would finish in 3:25-3:30. The weather was great for a race and the course was nice and flat. The course went through Audubun park, St. Charles Ave., French Quarter, and finished at City Park.

I usually have blinders on when I run, but I saw and heard Cindy cheering me on at the finish. I ended up finishing in 3:20. I might have to come back next year to try the half marathon course. Cindy ran the half marathon with not that much training and finished the race in 2:39, she managed to pick up some beads while running the race course. I recommend this race, it has a fast flat course.
