BOSTON MARATHON MONDAY APRIL 19, 2010

I use to think that the Boston Marathon was the Super Bowl of running, now I think of it as the All Star game of running. The best of the best come and run this race. There were over 26000 registered all stars in Boston with 22540 finishing the marathon.

I have been told that the hardest part of the Boston Marathon was the hills. The hardest part for me was to qualify for this race. It took me 34 marathon’s to finally qualify for this race. It took Vu one of my running buddies who qualified to get me motivated. There were a bunch of us trying to qualify for Boston and we couldn’t let Vu go to Boston without an entourage.

I had to train harder than I had before and one of the hardest parts of training was to watch what I ate. I use to eat junk food all the time. Vu told me to cut that out and see what happens. It was hard to give up junk food, but it did help. I hated doing long runs but I liked running races. A running buddy, Mike had this plan last year to run a marathon a month. So I did the same thing, instead of doing a long run I just ran a marathon a month. It was an awesome experience running all these marathon’s in different places with different running buddies and meeting new one’s.

The race I had as my BQ race was the Long Beach International Marathon, last October. I picked this race because I knew the course and the weather is usually good. It was a hard race for me but I qualified with a time of 3:13:10. I registered for the Boston Marathon right when I got back into my hotel room after the race.

After qualifying for the Boston Marathon I lost motivation to train hard. I did set another PR four weeks later at the Santa Clarita Marathon with a time of 3:10:31, I think that was a fluke. I finished off my last marathon of 2009, then didn’t run at all for a few weeks. I started running again, because I registered for the Goofy Challenge and I didn’t want to get too beat up for that race, I still didn’t have that intensity that I had before I qualified for Boston. I was thinking of running Boston as a fun run, I didn’t have that motivation to race a marathon but I did keep my base mileage for January, while I was contemplating racing or running Boston for fun.

In February, I came back from the Surf City Half and found out that my running coach from high school had passed away. I thought about how he coached me throughout high school and how he had faith in me to bring me up to varsity my freshman year. I thought if I didn’t race Boston for myself, I should race it for my coach. I started training hard again, I was in good shape in February I ran a 3:20 marathon in New Orleans. In March my goal was to run a 3:15 easy, but that didn’t happen, I ended up trying to race one of my rivals and finishing the race in 3:17 hard, not on schedule but I felt like I still could race Boston.

I took the red eye flight Friday night and arrived in Boston Saturday morning. I was trying to get into Boston as early as possible to acclimate to the time difference. I was going to wait for some friends at the airport but there flight got delayed so I decided to head to my hotel and get some breakfast before I went to the expo.

This was one of the biggest running expo’s I have ever attended. I went to pick up my marathon bib, then headed to the Adidas booth to checkout some running gear. It took me a few hours to checkout the expo.

On race day we caught the bus to the athletes village, we left early and the lines to get on the bus were still long. The drive to the athletes village took about an hour. I was so amazed of all the runners here, I have never ran a marathon with so much runners.

In the athletes village they had fluids and snacks before the race. I usually do a little warm up and stretching before a race but I was just mesmorized of the running vibe around me. I was taking pictures and chatting with friends instead. Time went by fast, I had about 20 minutes to get to my corral. I thought that was enough time to get a warm up and head to my corral. I didn’t know that the corral was .7 miles away from the athletes village. It took me 15 minutes to get to my corral, so I didn’t really get a good warm up.

As the race started I could see all the runners taking off, it took me 5 minutes to get to the start of the Boston Marathon. When it was my corrals turn to go we took off, it was just race pace from the start. Everyone was running 7:00-7:30 minute pace in my corral. It was like a flowing river I flowed with my corral, the first 5K was nice and a bit downhill. The course has water stops at every mile and crowd support was everywhere, it was a totally awesome experience. 10K I was still feeling great and running a great pace. 15K I was enjoying the run and pace watching the crowd cheer on all the runners.

Before I got to the half marathon mark of the race the course went to Wellesley college. You could hear the Wellesley crowd half a mile away, it pumped me up running by there. Half way through the race I ran a bit under 1:35, I was thinking I might have a chance to set a  new PR here. Mile 16 came and my right hip started feeling funny, I couldn’t get the same lift on my right leg by mile 17 it locked up on me. I stopped and stretched for a bit, I tried to run but couldn’t keep a good pace. At mile 21 I couldn’t keep a 10 minute pace, I decided to take it easy since I had another marathon coming up in 6 days, I did alot of walking the second half of the marathon. I enjoyed the crowd cheering me on even if I was walking. It took me 1:35 to finish the first half but 2:05 the second half to finish in 3:40. I had a great experience running my first Boston Marathon, I will be back next year.

Jean, qualified at last years Boston Marathon with a time of 2:48:38. He is a three time Boston qualifier and this was also his third Boston Marathon. He got sick prior to the race, he didn’t run at all two weeks before the Boston Marathon. He gave it a go but didn’t have it, so he decided to take it easy. He was eating licorice and picking flowers for his wife while running the Boston Marathon, he finished in 3:12.

Dennis qualified at last years Silicon Valley Marathon with a time of 3:18:16. He is a two time Boston qualifier and this was his first Boston Marathon. He was here to race, he re-qualified for the Boston Marathon with his second fastest marathon time of 3:20.

Proxy also qualified at last years Silicon Valley Marathon with a time of 3:28:44. He is a four time Boston qualifier and this was also his first Boston Marathon, he had a blast and could had done better but had fun giving high 5’s to almost every spectator. He finished with a re qualifying time of 3:32.

Nelson qualified at the California International Marathon 2008 with a time of 3:29:06. He is a six time Boston qualifier and a 2 time Boston Marathon finisher. He raced Boston so hard that he had to get an IV at the finish line aid station when he finished. With a extended stay at the Wellesley portion of the marathon course, he still managed to finish the marathon in 3:38.

Bernalyn qualified at last years San Francisco Marathon, which is also her marathon PR 3:36:08. She is a three time Boston qualifier and this was her first Boston Marathon. She had to study for her college classes during her stay in Boston but she still managed to re qualify with a time of 3:40.

Vu also qualified for the Boston Marathon at last years San Francisco Marathon, this was also her marathon PR 3:34:25. She is a two time Boston qualifier and this was her first Boston Marathon. She was injured before the marathon and someone kicked her in the knee in her corral to make matters worse. She soldiered on and finished her first Boston Marathon in 3:42.

Linda qualified at the Two Cities Marathon in Fresno last year, she didn’t know that she qualified until someone told her that she gets 59 seconds of leeway. Her time for that race was 3:45:26 which was also her PR. This was her first Boston Marathon and she ran a great race with her second fastest marathon time finishing in 3:46.

Allison qualified at last years Silicon Valley Marathon with a PR time of 3:57:56. This was her first Boston Marathon, she had a great time in Boston and had a consistent race finishing her first Boston Marathon in 4:07.

April qualified at last years Portland Marathon with a PR time of 4:02:10. This was also her first Boston Marathon and this was only her third career marathon. She hated the long wait to get into the bus and she had to battle through cramps during the race but managed to finish the race in one piece with a time of 4:28.

BIG SUR INTERNATIONAL MARATHON SUNDAY APRIL 25, 2010

This was the 25th anniversary of the Big Sur Marathon and all the events sold out. I ran the marathon last year and told myself I would never run this marathon again! But this year they offered the inaugural Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge, the enticement of being the few (400 B2B participants) that finished this inaugural event had me registering for this challenge.

I was debating between racing this marathon or making it a mara-fun-run. It was such a gorgeous day that I decided to just run it for fun. It was great to take in the views instead of being worried about the pace and time. I had a great time bumping into running buddies on the course, snacking at aid stations, and taking pictures.

The Big Sur Marathon course is not easy, plenty of hills to give you a workout. Herman had a fast time finishing the marathon with a BQ time of 3:26. Jean finished the marathon in 3:33 and completed the B2B Challenge. Dennis also finishing up the B2B Challenge, finished the marathon in 3:39. Will finishing his second marathon in a month finished with a new marathon PR 3:40. Proxy finished marathon #4 of 2010 and completed the B2B Challenge, he finished in 3:43. Rebecca running marathon #6 of 2010 finished in 3:46, a minute away from a BQ time. Roni ran marathon #2 of 2010 finishing under 4 hours with a time of 3:56. Prasun completed marathon #2 of his career finishing in 4:03. Allison finished marathon #3 of 2010 with a time of 4:16 and also completed the B2B Challenge. Loi finished her first marathon of 2010 with some running cramming sessions in 4:21. Tammy finished marathon #4 of 2010 in 4:33. Hai running her first marathon of 2010 sets a new PR finishing in 5:08. Felix picked a tough course to run his very first marathon and finished in 5:27, I think all other marathons will be easier compared to this one for him. His next marathon is the Athens Marathon in October. Hoang ran the 21 miler getting ready for the OC Marathon, finishing in 5:13. Team SJ Road Runner (Ram, Lien, William, & Nghi) ran a 4 person relay instead of the usual 5 person team. William picked up the extra leg taking a 5 minute break during one of the legs to video tape the piano player, they finished in 4:35. Hugo also ran his second straight Big Sur relay but I didn’t know the name of his team. All I know is that he was the only male on the team and he did the hardest leg #3 then finished the rest of the race.

THE RELAY SATURDAY & SUNDAY MAY 1 & 2, 2010

There were over 200 teams for this year’s Relay. 2 days+200 miles+2 vans+12 runners+36 legs=THE RELAY. The Google team won there fourth straight Relay in 21 hours and 9 minutes. I volunteered for this event with my cousin Madison for team Running Addicts. We volunteered at the Golden Gate bridge exchange point. We arrived at 9 pm, as we were parking I noticed a bunch of people gathered near the bridge. Later I found out someone tried to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, so they closed the lane that the runners were suppose to run on. The police talked that person down and they reopened the course again.

Our job was crowd control, we kept the path clear for the runners near the exchange point. The first few hours we just took pictures and played Star Wars for a bit. The first team came around 11:30 pm, the next team came in 10 minutes after.

Team “SOUNDED LIKE FUN”, comprised of members of the Bay Area Runners finished in 27 hours and 7 minutes.

Team “RUNNERS ANONYMOUS”, comprised of Roni and his friends who have been doing this race a few years now, finished there fastest relay time in 28 hours and 13 minutes.

Team “A CHORUS LINE”, was Mayank team, they finished in 29 hours 31 minutes.

Team “RUNNING ADDICTS”, this team is comprised of Running Addicts/Sports Basement runners/employees. Mike spotted a few skunks on the leg I ran a couple of years ago, he didn’t get sprayed like I did. They finished in 30 hours and 22 minutes.

DEVIL MOUNTAIN 5K/10K SUNDAY MAY 2, 2010

Life after the marathon scene, running shorter races for the summer. There were 3000 registered runners for the Devil Mountain 5K/10K. I ran this race to make up a day I missed for my Distance Track Class. I had to run with my coach’s business jersey “In Training” to make up my missed day. I heard of this race before and I always thought there was some sort of hill on the course because of the name (Devil Mountain). The course was nice and flat and the weather was great for a run. I was a bit tired from volunteering for The Relay a few hours before this race. I started near the front of the start and started running with the front pack of runners. I tried to stay with them but the pace was too fast for me, our first mile was in the 5 minute pace. I decided to slow down so I can finish this race in one piece. I ended up finishing the 5K in 19:05 finishing 20th overall and 1st in my division. Loi was also tired and was just running this race without any expectation. She managed to finish in 23:31, 27th overall female, and 2nd in her division. Christine walked the 5K for fun and finished in 46:20. Ben ran the 10K finishing the race in 47:17, then flew to Taipei after the race for work. This was his third race within the last four weeks and he is getting ready for the RNR San Diego Marathon in June.

INAUGURAL US HALF “THE OTHER HALF” SUNDAY APRIL 11, 2010

There were over 2000 registered runners (900 from groupon) for this event but only 1400 runners finished the race. I think the weather had something to do with that. Once again the females (742) out numbered the males (696) this is one of the other things this race is known for besides running across the Golden Gate Bridge. This was my third time running this half marathon, the race starts and finishes at Aquatic Park. I was worried about the weather for this race, I don’t do well against wind and rain then you add the hills which I despise. The weather did hold up for me. When the race started we hit a slight incline, I decided to stay with the first female. Our first mile was low 6’s, I thought to myself that was too fast for me so I slowed down. I was feeling good as we ran through the Presidio, at mile 4 we hit the incline to the Golden Gate Bridge on the way to the bridge was nice and I saw a barge moving under the bridge. On the way back from the Golden Gate Bridge we had another incline and fierce wind gus to deal with. Sean caught me at mile 9 near the tail end of the Golden Gate Bridge. Mile 10 I felt a calve cramp coming so I decided to take it easy the last few miles, I didn’t want to get injured before Boston, I finished in 1:33 and got a cool water bottle at the finish.

Sean ran a 1:30 half marathon with his 7 mile only workout at Rancho. Ron finished with a 1:38 getting blown around from the winds on the Golden Gate Bridge. Will running half marathon #3 of 2010 finished in 1:41, next race the Big Sur Marathon followed by a break from running. Roni finished in 1:48 and will be a pacer at the Big Sur Marathon. Ram set a new PR finishing in 1:50, this was half marathon #2 of this year for him. Linh ran a 1:52 half marathon coming back from his injury. William finished in 1:56 crying the last .1 mile of the race setting a new PR. Jay running his first half marathon of the year finished in 1:56. Bernie running his second US Half Marathon finished in 1:57. Allison getting ready for the Boston to Big Sur Challenge finished her second half marathon this year in 2:01. Tammy getting ready for the Big Sur Marathon finished in 2:01. Karen running her second half of this year finished in 2:05. Nghi running part 1 of back to back weekends of running a half marathon finished in 2:13, the Mermaid half will be part 2, followed by the Big Sur Marathon Relay, then the OC Marathon. Francis playing pacer finished in 2:16. Andrew running with his crazy training plan, no training finished in 2:16. Hai finished in 2:17 next up for her is the Big Sur Marathon followed by a much deserved vacation. Hoang finished her first half marathon of 2010 in 2:22. Lien finished in 2:39 getting ready for her marathons the OC Marathon and the Rock N Roll San Diego Marathon. INAUGURAL OAKLAND RUNNING FESTIVAL SUNDAY MARCH 28, 2010

The Inaugural Oakland Running Festival had over 6000 participants running the 5K, relay, half marathon, and marathon. At the starting line Mark Curry (Hanging with Mr. Cooper tv series) was giving high fives to all the runners, I thought that was cool, he was even at the finish congratulating all the finishers.

The Oakland Marathon course is not a easy course but aside from the hills from miles 5-10 it was mostly flat. The half marathon was a flat course. I was surprised by all the crowd support, I wasn’t expecting too much people on the course cheering the runners on but there seemed to be crowd support everywhere. They were saying “go oakland”, “thanks for running”, “great job”, a bunch of positive things it was motivating. I think the organizers did a great job for this inaugural event and I would recommend running this race at least once.

5K, RELAY, and HALF MARATHON

Prasun ran the first leg for his marathon relay team Rundisk, his leg had a slight incline. He finished leg 1 in 50:08, his team finished 10th overall. Loi ran her second half of the year, she thought she did not have enough training for this race but she still managed to finish in 1:51, I think she could had done better if she would had started in the first corral instead of the middle corral. Mike running with that crazy beard and not that much training finished in 2:07. Hai participated in two events, she ran the 5K the day before the half marathon and finished in 30:25 for a new PR, then ran the half marathon a few hours later. She finished the half in 2:11, she is getting ready for the US Half and the Big Sur Marathon.

MARATHON

I was suppose to use this marathon as my last long run before Boston. Then I found out my rival registered for this race two weeks before race day. This was a rare oppurtunity, since she only races 1 or 2 marathon’s a year and this would be our first time going head to head in the marathon event. We have raced each other 7 times in various distances, she has the series lead 4-3.

I was looking for her at the start and didn’t find her untill 5 minutes before the race started. She arrived with her entourage team Pamakids, there were about 6 of them near the front of the starting line, she was the only female in there group. I went up to her and chated a bit, I asked her what time she was expecting. She replied I want to run a 3:10 but the pace group was running even splits for the whole marathon and this marathon has a hill on the course. She didn’t think she could do even splits through the hills. She then asked me what time I was expecting from this race, I told her 3:15 but I am going to try to pace with you. She smiled and said good luck, I said thanks I am going to need it to stay with you.

As the gun sounded I was right behind her and team Pamakids, we ran the first 3 miles at a great pace, as we hit mile 4 three of her teammates took off and the other two stayed with her. We hit mile 5 and I can feel the inclines starting, she was strong she ran maybe 10-20 seconds slower on the hills. I suck at uphills, I was 30-40 seconds slower. The next few miles were hills and I can see her getting further and further away from me. I was just thinking keep her in sight, I lost sight of her at mile 8, as I hit the crest of the hill at mile 10. I saw one of her teammates at the bottom of the hill but didn’t see her, I thought to myself you better get going or you are really gonna lose her. I decided to gun the downhill. The downhill was about a mile long, I had a fast split for that mile (5:45) and as I turned the corner at the end of the downhill that is when I saw her. I caught up to her around mile 11, she saw me and looked surprised to see me, she said Mark and I said yup. I was thinking I am beat up from the hills, she should be too. I was wrong the next 5 miles she was runing 6:50-7:15 pace, I was having a hard time keeping up with her. At mile 16 I couldn’t even keep a 7:30 pace, after that she was outta here. I totally gave up after I lost sight of her, all I wanted to do now was finish the race. I finished the marathon in 3:16:59, my third fastest marathon time and my fastest marathon time with a hill in it. I met up with my rival at the end of the race and congratulated her, she finished in 3:08. With a smile she said you should had paced your yourself, I said yeah I know. That was the first time she talked smack to me, that was cool. She now owns the head to head series 5-3. http://www.athlinks.com/RivalCompare.aspx?ridc=41465516&rid=19061678

This was Monica’s first marathon of 2010, my rivals last marathon was in December. She ran CIM and finished with a PR of 3:08:44. She is from Oakland so she knew the course, she killed it and finished with her second fastest marathon time of 3:08:58, seconds away from a PR. She finished as the fourth female overall and second in her age group. Will seems to be improving at every race, he finished the Shamrockn’ half in 1:33 a few weeks ago, then sets a new marathon PR in Oakland with a time of 3:43. That was almost a 8 minute improvement from his previous marathon PR and this course is not easy, next challenge for Will the Big Sur Marathon. Rebecca running marathon #5 of this year and her second marathon in two weeks, she totally surprised me by running a 3:46. I didn’t think she could break 4 hours since she ran the LA Marathon a week prior to this race. I was lucky chatting with her before the race and she is thinking about doing the Tahoe Triple again. She asked if I was going to run it also, I told her no way my name isn’t Rebecca. The Tahoe Triple is three different marathon’s in three consecutive days in Lake Tahoe and they all have hills. This was also her 40th marathon which coincidentally was my 40th also. Roni was the 3:50 pacer for this race, we bumped into him at the expo. He was injured but still managed to pace the 3:50 group, Roni finished in 3:49. Big Sur will be his next marathon also. Proxy had problems with the hills like me but still did a great job finishing in 3:50, he has the US Half coming up followed by the Boston Marathon, then Big Sur. William running marathon #2 of his career was worried about his knee the day before the race, he bought some knee braces the day before race day. He finished the race in 4:22 over an hour faster than his first marathon. I think it also helped that he didn’t do a 20 mile run a few days before, like he did when he ran his first marathon. Tammy running her third marathon (Surf City, Napa, and Oakland) this year and her second marathon in March finished in 4:40, she also has the Big Sur Marathon as her next marathon.

GO GREEN ST. PATRICKS DAY 10K/5K SUNDAY MARCH 14, 2010

The Inaugural Go Green St. Patrick’s day 5K/10K put on by Moshan productions. This race sold out and had around 700 finishers (10K female-288 male-147 5K female-208 male-77). The course was kinda crazy but it was a fun race. I bumped into one of my rivals at the race Monica Zhuang, she didn’t know that the race was sold out and she drove all the way from Belmont. She ran the race bandit and she kicked my ass even if it was unofficial. If she was registered for this race she would had came in first overall female in the 10K

We had Linh and his family volunteering at the water stop on mile 4 with Mike. I got splashed by Cameron to cool me down a bit. Herman also had his family volunteering at the finish line taking chips off the runners. Roni was also there not sure where he was volunteering but he will be out running the Oakland Marathon at the end of the month.

I was suppose to pace with Herman, but like every race I took off fast. Herman, finished in 39:17 placing 1st in his division and that was a week after finishing a 3:06 marathon in Napa. I finished in 43:29, I embarrassed myself by telling my rival I was trying to finish in 40 minutes. Debbie, wearing her crazy head gear finished in 49:57 placing 3rd in her division. Fumi, coming off a 5K a week ago finished the 10K in 1:01:34. Kelly, double dipping finished 1st overall female and 1st in her division with a time of 24:27 for the 5K.

HONG KONG MARATHON & HALF SUNDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2010

Gil’s race experience at the Hong Kong Marathon

The race was the toughest so far due to higher than expected temperature and level of humidity.  Many runners collapsed with injuries (cramping and dehydrated) and some were taken to the hospital with four of them critical. The race started at 6:00AM and we were sweating before the race, which tells you that the condition was bad.  Up to KM13 mark was flat, and rolling hills from KM14 to KM20 mark.  Organizers changed the course this time and added another uphill segment to it.  The race was not as convenient compared to races in US because not enough porta toilets were provided, nothing was visible in the starting area.  One or two portas were along the road.  Water/drink stations were at every 5 kilometers.  Limited food at the finish line and spectators were very quiet.  As a whole, the race was really dry, not fun. I don’t think the race can be recommended.

ROCK N ROLL MARDI GRAS MARATHON SUNDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2010

I knocked out another state off my marathon bucket list. I got to participate in the Inaugural Rock N Roll Mardi Gras Marathon, with over 12800 other runners (3515 marathon finishers and 9308 half marathon finishers). I wasn’t expecting to do much since my trip to New Orleans was basically a day and a half. I took a red eye flight Saturday at midnight from San Francisco and came back on Sunday. I did so much in that amount of time, thanks to Cindy and Noel.

Two of my running buddies showed me New Orleans, Noel my cross country team mate from high school played chauffer while Cindy was my tour guide for this awesome trip. Noel picked us up from the airport right before his golf game and dropped us off at our hotel, from there Cindy and I took the walk to the expo. I found out at the expo that Sugoi was not a sponsor anymore but Brooks took over. We picked up our packets and checked out the expo, then headed out to explore New Orleans.

Lucky I had Cindy with me as a tour guide, she use to live in Baton Rouge and knew New Orleans. We headed to the River Walk Mall and stopped by Cafe Du Monde for some coffee and beignets. We also checked out the french market place, a few shops, street performers, and ate a muffuletta sandwich at Central Market. This might be my new pre race snack if I can find a place that makes them here.

On our way back to our hotel we passed by Bourbon street, I knew they had a bunch of bars there, but I didn’t know they had strip clubs there also. Cindy was educating me on religious beliefs there and about the mardi gras beads while we were walking around the French Quarter.

We headed to Orleans Redvine for dinner, I had the fish plate special with a creme brulee for dessert as a pre race dinner. New Orlean’s has great food, I’ll have to come back and try more food. I wanted to try some spicy stuff but I wasn’t sure how my stomach would react to it during the race. I also got to try a oyster bun po-boy sandwich at Johnny’s Po Boys. Cindy found a baby pearl in her grilled oyster bun po-boy sandwich, the funny thing is that this is the third time she has found a baby pearl while eating a oyster.

THE RACE

Cindy and I took the shuttle to the start from the superdome which was close to our hotel. The race started on Race street (funny)/Tchoupitoulas street. There were a few Mardi Gras floats on the course. The course was mostly flat with water stations at every mile. This was the first Rock N Roll race that I have participated in that didn’t have pace groups. This race was a training long run to see what kind of shape I was in for me. I was thinking I would finish in 3:25-3:30. The weather was great for a race and the course was nice and flat. The course went through Audubun park, St. Charles Ave., French Quarter, and finished at City Park.

I usually have blinders on when I run, but I saw and heard Cindy cheering me on at the finish. I ended up finishing in 3:20. I might have to come back next year to try the half marathon course. Cindy ran the half marathon with not that much training and finished the race in 2:39, she managed to pick up some beads while running the race course. I recommend this race, it has a fast flat course.

SURF CITY MARATHON AND HALF SUNDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2010

A bunch of us ran the sold out Huntington Beach Surf City Marathon and Half. The race filled up and sold out in late December. There were 20000 registered runners for this race.

The expo was not all that, we got a cool Surf City tote bag but nothing inside. Some of us finished the California Dreamin’ Challenge and picked up our jackets at the expo. This years jacket is more breathable than the first generation jacket. A few of us got suckered into buying the power balance watch, I would had bought one but they ran out of the black ones.

PRE RACE DINNER BUCCA DI BEPPO

We had a great pre race dinner at Bucca Di Beppo, Deb organized a great meal with more than enough food for everyone and a awesome desert platter.

THE SURF CITY MARATHON AND HALF

This was my second Surf City race, last year I ran the marathon. This year I ran the half, I liked the half better than the marathon. The course is flat and fast, the marathon is a good flat course but I didn’t like all the turns on the marathon course. The weather was great once again. I finished the half marathon in 1:48:57. Some of our runners that finished this race, registered for the Napa Valley Marathon the day after this race.

THE MARATHONERS

Proxy lead our marathon crew finishing with a Boston qualifying time of 3:30, his new nickname is the “RE-QUALIFIER”. Rebecca running her first marathon of 2010, qualifies for the 115th Boston Marathon in 2011 with a time of 3:45. Linh coming off an injury broke the 4 hour mark and finished in 3:58 and he was not 100%. Michele ran her best marathon time finishing in 4:55. Nghi running her second marathon of 2010 finished in 4:56. Deb finishing up her California Dreamin’ Challenge, finished the marathon in 5:18. Lien also finished her California Dreamin’ Challenge, finished in 5:50.

THE HALF MARATHONERS

Christian lead our crew of half marathoners, he finished with a blazing time of 1:28. Loi crushed her previous PR and finished with a 1:48. Allison ran this race as a fun run, she finished in 2:02. Elena missed last year race due to injury, they let her carry her entry over to this year, she finished in 2:28. Jennifer also finishing up the California Dreamin’ Challenge finished in 2:37. Kim finished her first half of 2010 in 2:41, one race down two to go till she gets her California Dreamin’ jacket and medal.

Over 1200 runners participated in this years race. This was my third consecutive Chinese New Year 10K. The weather this year held up and we didn’t run in the rain like last year. I did this race for the cool year of tiger t-shirt, I tried to hang with the top female runner but she kicked my ass, she finished in 38 minutes, I finished in 41 minutes. Felix running his second consectutive Chinese New Year 5K didn’t get beat by a 12 year old this year, he even passed a few of them up. He had a great race with each mile of the 5K faster than the other. I don’t know what happened to his official results but his Garmin got him finishing in 23 minutes.

GOOFY WEEKEND RESULTS

WALT DISNEY WORLD MARATHON & HALF SAT/SUN JANUARY 9 & 10, 2010

7500 runners registered for the Goofy Challenge in Orlando Florida. The race consist of running a half marathon on Saturday followed by a marathon on Sunday. A little over 6000 runners finished the Goofy Challenge. Nghi, Joe, and I were one of the finishers who finished this foolish challenge. This was also our first half marathon and marathon for the new year. All event’s sold out for the Walt Disney World race weekend, 55000 runners participated in all the events that weekend (5K fun run, kids run, half marathon, and marathon). This was Nghi’s first Goofy Challenge, my second, and Joe has ran in all five of them!

DONALD’S HALF MARATHON

It was cold, raining, with sleet at the start and during the half marathon with over 17000 runners, on top of that we were in the very last corral. I thought corral G was for the Goofy Challenge runners. I found out it was the last corral when I asked the runner next to me how many corrals were out here, she said “this is the last corral”. I hit the starting line 40 minutes after the start of the race.

It was crazy running this race, it was like trying to race Bay to Breakers in the back of the pack. People were just walking, chatting (some on there cell phones), and taking pictures through the whole race. I was hurdling clothes left from the other corrals and weaving through all the walkers. I was thinking maybe it will clear up in a mile or two. I was too far behind for anything to clear up, I kept hitting all the corrals that started ahead of me. I finally got some room to run at mile 10 and got a clear path the last mile. I had to work harder than I expected to hit my goal time for the half marathon, I finished the half in 1:37. Runners thought Nghi was from Michigan since she was wearing shorts, everyone else in the corral had tights or sweats on, Nghi finished in 2:24. Joe didn’t have to start in the last corral, it must be his legacy status for running all five Goofy Challenges that got him in a closer corral, Joe finished in 2:19:15.

MICKEY’S MARATHON

The marathon had freezing temperatures, in the 20’s. There were over 16000 runners for the marathon, I was stuck in the last corral once again. It took me 30 minutes to get to the start. My first mile was close to 9 minutes, I didn’t want to dodge all the other runners again, so I decided to make the marathon a long run instead of racing it. It was so cold that the water at the water stops were frozen! The marathon course was cool, we got to run in the different Disney theme parks and back stage, I finished in 3:56. Joe finishing his fifth straight Goofy Challenge. He finished with his fastest Goofy Challenge marathon time 5:16 with coaching tips from Jeff Galloway during the expo. Nghi having fun taking pictures during her race finished in 5:50 with a smile at the finish and most of all limp free after the race.

LOS GATOS RESOLUTION RUN FRIDAY JANUARY 1, 2010

There were over 350 runners participating in this years Los Gatos Resolution 5 mile run. Some of us wore matching outfit’s, that was kind of funny. Jay and Prasun both had grey tops and black shorts, Herman and Bernie had white tops and black shorts, & Proxy and I were wearing black and red for this race. Herman lead us with a time of 32:02, I finished in 33:47 faster than last years time, Proxy finished in 37:54, Will followed close by and finished in 38:04, Prasun & Jay finished in 38:36 & 38:37 smiling as they both finished together making the run look like a stroll in the park, Bernie finished in 41:14, Linh finished in 43:19 he ran Rancho the day before, Hai finished in 53:22 I think she could had ran faster, she was carrying a conversation with me as I was running a cool down while she was finishing the race, and Madison finished in 56:35. We all managed to finish in the top 300 to receive a goody bag. We also had two raffle winners, Herman won a $15 gift certificate and Bernie won a $100 gift certificate. AWESOME way to start the New Year!!!
